Sterling Slemp and Sheza Little Wimpy Win Novice Horse Open South Central Affiliate Regional Championship

Since 2005, the Tulsa Reining Classic has played host to the National Reining Horse Association’s South Central Affiliate Regional Championships. On Thursday, September 3, the first Affiliate Champions were crowned in the Mustang Arena at Expo Square in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

With a score of 73, Sterling Slemp rode Sheza Little Wimpy to claim the Novice Horse Open Levels 1 and 2 Affiliate Regional Championships, and first place in the ancillary Novice Horse Open Levels 1 and 2. “She was good. She didn’t have any big bobbles, turned hard, and stopped good,” Slemp said.

He began riding Sheza Little Wimpy, nicknamed Daisy, about a year ago. He and owner Barb Matteson were trying to find a new Non Pro horse. “We were looking for a new horse for Barb to show, and we found her,” he explained. “She’s won several thousand this year already. I think Barb is going to show her at Kansas next week in the Green Reiner class, and then I’ll show at the affiliate championships in Oklahoma City.”

Matteson, of Hallsville, Missouri, was on hand for the awards. “I’m incredibly excited,” she said. “I ride her all the time and love her dearly. She’s very easy to ride – very pleasant – and takes care of me.”

When asked about her trainer, Matteson said, “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Sterling. He’s done amazing things with this mare and has helped me so much with my riding and is probably the best trainer I have ever known in my life.”

Slemp is a Tulsa regular, and said, “I love this show. It’s fun. The competition is always good and the facility is good and it’s a great place for a horse show.”

And although she’s not showing here this week, when asked if she would in 2016, Matteson said, “You better believe it!”
